FIRST VENTURES

Support program for entrepreneurial students at UAS

Next submission deadline: 01.12.2025

With «First Ventures», Gebert Rüf Stiftung supports bachelor’s and master’s students of Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences UAS who are developing an innovative business idea out of their studies towards the market. The support includes graduated contributions up to a maximum of CHF 150,000 as well as an individually tailored coaching program which will smooth the way to launching a startup. The Impact Clips show what the previous First Ventures winners have achieved.

Objective: Innovation at Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences

«First Ventures» supports entrepreneurial UAS students who want to pursue their innovation projects during their studies or immediately after graduation. With graduated contributions of up to CHF 150,000, the program paves the way for your own spin-off. For the duration of the First Ventures project, the project managers are employed by the University of Applied Sciences and have full budget autonomy.

As the First Ventures case «Luya Foods» illustrates, start-up projects usually go through three funding stages - from the PROOF stage to the VALIDATE stage and finally the EXECUTE stage.

Funding Stage & Project Duration Goal Requirements Funded Steps Max. Amount
PROOF
Up to 3 months
Test feasibility Initial concept with a clearly defined problem worth solving Needs assessment, feasibility analysis, early prototypes CHF 25,000
VALIDATE
Up to 6 months
Validate business case Early stage business model, first MVP tests or user feedback Pilot projects, validation of business and impact potential CHF 50,000
EXECUTE
Up to 9 months
Launch to market Validated business model and a committed, execution-ready founding team Roll-out, market entry, scaling CHF 75,000

The transition from one funding level to the next is based on a report on the milestones defined in the support agreement and a pitch to the Board of Trustees.

If a start-up project has already achieved the objectives of a funding level, it is also possible to enter the VALIDATE or EXECUTE phase directly. In this case, CHF 50,000 or CHF 150,000 can be applied for.

The evaluation and decision phase lasts three months for all applications, regardless of the funding level.

The «First Ventures» program not only provides financial support, but also individually tailored business training and coaching sessions as well as access to a broad start-up network. The curriculum is designed to equip the potential company founders with the tools they need to successfully put their business idea into practice.
