Project description
Almost one third of all apprenticeship contracts in Switzerland are terminated early. This has serious consequences for those affected, as well as for society and the economy: one in five teenagers does not find a way back into an apprenticeship, which is shown to lead to lower income, higher risk of unemployment, and total societal costs of over 40 million Swiss francs per year.
But it is not surprising that many teenagers feel overwhelmed: at the age of 14, they are expected to choose from nearly 250 apprenticeship professions, often without sufficient self-reflection and without targeted parental support. Empirical studies have identified parents as the most important influence in this process, but many are unfamiliar with the wide range of professions or feel overwhelmed themselves.
To address this issue, we have been developing Stellenmatch for two years now. On our webapp, teenagers have a 45-minute, voice-based conversation with our AI, where they will answer open questions about their hobbies, preferences and dreams. Not typing or generic questionnaires, but a truly personalized experience that feels like talking to a friend. Our AI listens to the teenager’s answers and asks smart follow-up questions to identify key traits and compare them with all 250 apprenticeship professions in Switzerland. It then suggests the best matches, with personalized explanations and practical recommendations, showing families exactly why a job fits so well.
Helping teenagers to make an informed decision about their future allows for less apprenticeship terminations caused by job-person mismatch, resulting in a solid base for a fulfilled career and actively addressing the shortage of skilled workers.
Status/Results
The main goal of the project was to develop the MVP into a market-ready solution. We achieved by launching our webapp: it runs autonomously, has 120+ registered teenagers, and 91.6% reported it helped in their career choice.
Stellenmatch closes a key gap in Swiss career guidance by replacing static tests with personalized, conversational AI, helping teenagers genuinely reflect themselves and discover suitable career paths. The platform was piloted in classes of three schools, presented at two career fairs, and has already attracted 9 teachers who have requested access for their students.
Stellenmatch GmbH was founded, an ETH developer and fundraising intern hired, and potential partnerships initiated with Lehrberufe Live (industry videos), schools and BIZ offices (public sector).
Continuation focuses on securing a stable source of revenue and securing follow-up funding.
Stellenmatch has proven to address a need effectively and is now working on becoming accessible to as many teenagers as possible.
