Project management

Project description

Commuting by bicycle has become increasingly popular as an eco-friendly means of transportation. However, it is not without its dangers. In Switzerland alone, nearly 5,000 road accidents involving cyclists were reported in 2022, with a notable increase in accidents involving electric bicycles, particularly in heavily trafficked areas. Thus, enhancing visibility is a critical factor in improving cyclist safety. To address this need, the SideLights project is developing an innovative bicycle light system that aims to enhance safety and the overall commuting experience for cyclists. By providing 360-degree visibility, the SideLights system offers a comprehensive solution to ensure cyclists can be seen from all directions. The lights also effectively illuminate the cyclist's full width to indicate changes in direction. By providing an easy-to-use and design, the project aims to encourage widespread adoption and contributes to creating a safer and more enjoyable cycling environment.

Status/Results

During the first phase of the First Ventures program, we successfully transformed a concept into a realistic and functional prototype tailored to user needs. This led to the development of a plug-and-play system with integrated batteries, and the filing of a first Swiss patent.
Then, a second prototype was built, integrating a front beam light and an ergonomic button. The product was then redesigned to reach its final look, with a modular front light, an improved battery system, and refined ergonomics. A PCT patent application was filed at this stage.
Finally, this improved version was used in a highly successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, which validated strong product-market fit. The campaign resulted in 700 pre-orders across 36 countries, generating CHF 100’000 in pre-sales.
These funds allowed us to continue development under our company Claess Sàrl. We have implemented technical upgrades based on prototype testing (e.g. redesign of the rear light) and are now finalizing the industrialization phase. A new and final prototype batch is currently in production and will serve as the pre-industrial version.
In parallel, we are also developing a dedicated e-bike version of SideLights, designed to be directly integrated into the frame. A prototype of this version is being assembled, and partnerships with bicycle brands are being established for pilot testing.
