Biosimo, named after the Greek word for «sustainable», is a clean-tech start-up producing bio-based (renewable) chemicals to make synthetic products eco-friendly. The introduction of renewable chemicals and fuels is necessary to drive the transition from a fossil to a renewable carbon-based economy and achieve the ambitions of NetZero 2050 climate targets. Today, the most abundant and mature bio-based chemical is bioethanol. Our technology enables us to convert bioethanol into higher-level chemicals like acetic acid using our innovative catalytic process. This method is inexpensive, energy-efficient and scalable. Most importantly, it will support the reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 1,500 million tons p.a. in 2050. From this platform, we are creating a broad portfolio of green chemicals and solvents used in almost all products of our economy and providing essential components for sustainable jet fuels.
We have proven the scalability of the catalyst and the lab-scale pilot production of renewable acetic acid. Our first batch of renewable acetic acid was produced in December 2021 and shared with potential customers. We are now offering lab-scale samples of our renewable chemicals to all interested customers for testing. We plan to launch our pilot-scale production (10-50 tons p.a.) by the end of 2023 to substantiate economic feasibility and aim to reach commercial scale (> 30,000 tons p.a.) around 2026.
With the help of the Innobooster grant, we fund our R&D process team to design and develop our pilot plant in 2022 and 2023. Our R&D team will run validation tests with our collaborators to design the process (distillation and extraction). At the interim report, we aim to present the finalized pilot plant design and cost estimate that we will use as basis to commission our pilot plant build in 2023. By the time of the final report, we hope to have completed our pilot unit. With this pilot plant we will be able to provide the PoC for the scalability as well as provide customers with first significant quantities of product.
We have established relationships with customers in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sectors, while in terms of strategic partners, we are currently engaging with bio-ethanol producers for our implementation needs and with partners specialized in modular process solutions for the construction of our Pilot Plant.
As for funding, we are concluded our pre-seed phase in July 2022 including support from Venture Kick, SNF Bridge, and private investors cumulating at ca. CHF 800k.
