KUORI‘s goal is to develop a biodegradable, sustainable alternative material using the waste product banana peel in combination with a biopolymer, following the concept of a circular economy. The focus lies on the development of an alternative shoe outsole without microplastic abrasion according to the cradle-to-cradle (C2C) principle.
The awareness of problems such as microplastics and the linear, one-time use of resources resulting in large amounts of waste is rising rapidly and future-oriented solutions are needed. KUORI stands out thanks to its ability to create one solution that solves three problems: the banana peel seen as “waste” product is upcycled, the total amount of microplastics entering nature is reduced, and the C2C approach keeps precious resources in the life cycle.
KUORI‘s uniqueness stems from the following points:
- The properties of banana peel fibres are used for a biobased and biodegradable material
- The shoe industry is revolutionized by linking innovative material science with new technologies
We at KUORI believe that any product should be designed with natural, biodegradable materials - a circular economy is the future.
The project KUORI has started as a bachelor’s thesis in Industrial Design in 2020 and has constantly been further developed since the termination of the thesis in January 2021. A project team has been assembled during spring 2021 and a business and funding strategy was created. The project is in close collaboration with the Institute for Polymer Processing and Sustainability (FHNW) for the research and development and partners with the initiative Mehr als Zwei who collect discarded bananas from supermarkets and use them to create products.
On September 1st, we start with our Research & Material Development phase with the goal to have a first material prototype ready by December 2021. This phase further includes a patent research at the IGE, the completion of our project team with a material scientist, the procurement of all necessary input material and equipment as well as getting in touch with IBRE (Institute of Bioenergy and Resource Efficiency) for a Life Cycle Assessment in the next phase. Additionally, our online appearance will be completed with our own website and an official KUORI Instagram and LinkedIn channel. To ensure continued financing, we are applying to other foundations and envisage a crowdfunding launch on the platform wemakeit.
The various coaching programs (Creative Hub, Innovation Basel, or Grace Summer Accelerator) provide us with a large network of experts who serve as advisory board. After launching the project, a huge wave of interest has reached us from potential customers and business partners, and we are currently analyzing possible strategies for collaborations. Thanks to the strong international attention and positive feedback that we have received, we are excited to further advance our research project and contribute to a more future-oriented, circular economy.
