Projektbeschreibung
We propose the development of a prototype system for electromagnetic catheter steering based on a patented technology platform in development at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems of ETH Zurich since 2003. The original focus application for this technology was for targeted ophthalmic drug release. In this project we develop a catheter steering system for the treatment of arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.
Our electromagnetic system is capable of wirelessly moving objects from nanometer to centimeter size-scale within the human body. One key characteristic of our technology is the use of soft-magnetic cores in the electromagnets. Traditional magnetic manipulation systems rely on either permanent magnets or superconducting electromagnets. We have been able to solve complex technical obstacles and leverage the strengths of soft-magnetic cores.

The Gebert Rüf Stiftung is supporting this project because of the combination of its high degree of technical innovation and the high social and economic relevance of the proposed system.
Stand/Resultate
The prototype system has been assembled until the end of June 2012. The control software has been completed. The remaining time of the project will be used for testing and preparation of the design of the clinical prototype.
Moreover, additional progress towards commercialization has been made in terms of financial resources, collaborations and regulatory affairs.
