Over the recent years, mobile games gained immense popularity. Meanwhile, the political climate around the globe is getting more tense. Democratic institutions are questioned, while (political) individuals grow their following. In Switzerland, democratic participation is around a steady 50% during elections, and between 30-70% during votes.
Globalization and digitalization are rendering the political discourse more complex, while diverse and highly customized entertainment offers channel our interests towards leisure activities and media consumption instead of political self-education. Especially young people are asking for more user friendly, digital support, when it comes to finding and structuring neutral, political information.
CH+ is a participatory project, which aims to use game mechanics, in order to make political self-education more inviting and to motivate political participation. Through online surveys and testing sessions, people from all political corners have the opportunity to contribute to the concept, which is being developed in an iterative process from election to election.

Was ist das Besondere an diesem Projekt?

The project’s iterative nature, which is based on co-design and interdisciplinary exchange, allows for the identification of new solutions at the intersection of politics, game design and user experience. In every development cycle, users have the possibility to influence the product by participating in online surveys or testing sessions.

During local elections in the canton Uri in March 2020, a beta version of the app was openly accessible.
At the same time, four school classes and one class of trainees have participated in an A/B test between the beta-version of the application and a traditional electoral support.
The feedback collected in this pilot are the foundation for the next iteration of the application.
