Today, interaction with technology is largely dominated by screens, glass and plastic components. At the same time, the smart home sector is rapidly growing, increasing the need for more sustainable and design-integrated interfaces.
Sensational Wood explores how natural materials like wood can become interactive interfaces. Using a technology developed at ETH Zurich, conductive sensor patterns are embedded directly into wood, enabling touch, proximity and humidity sensing without visible electronics.
As a first step, we will develop a wooden interface for light control and test it in a real architectural environment, evaluating usability, integration and market potential.
The project opens new opportunities for architecture, furniture and interior design by allowing technology to blend seamlessly into materials and spaces. In the long term, it contributes to more resource-efficient, repairable and human-centered interaction with technology.
Stand/Resultate
During the Proof Phase, the project will develop and implement a first wooden interface prototype for light control in the relaxation room at HSLU. The pilot installation will allow evaluation of usability, technical performance and architectural integration in a real environment. In parallel, interviews with early adopters, architects and potential industry partners will help identify promising use cases and target markets.
The project addresses the gap between sustainable building materials and conventional plastic-based electronic interfaces by integrating sensing directly into renewable substrates such as wood. The technology also enables thinner, lighter interfaces and supports complex shapes.
Expected outcomes include a functional prototype, clearly defined MVP requirements and a refined business case. Early collaborations with architecture studios and industry partners will be explored.
Following the Proof Phase, the project will continue through the First Ventures Validate Phase to further develop the MVP, conduct additional pilot projects and prepare market entry. Follow-up funding is planned through programs such as BRIDGE, Innosuisse innovation projects and venture support.
